Safely Feeding our Children

Author: Susan Yurek

There are wonderful articles about the growing organic food industry that discuss feeding children responsibly. Young mothers, in particular those choosing to pulverize their own recipes for their babies, are embracing new lines of organic baby food. Peek into their fridges and you'll find organic milk, cheeses, and farm stand, organic or home grown fruits and vegetables.

I must say my own daughters ate our table food and home grown organic vegetables (carefully selected of course), that were pulverized into baby food consistency. My girls not only thrived, but had well developed palettes at a young age.

The primary concern is the abundance of added industrial chemicals, hormones, farm pesticides, and artificial fillers absorbed by small children. Add to that crops grown from genetically engineered seed, and one must ask what on earth is industry feeding our children?

Naturally when consumers express interest, corporations are anxious to grab the bucks. Expect the most familiar child-based corporations to make deals to distribute organic baby food, which is fine. Take full advantage of the choices, but READ THE LABELS!

Children require far more food per pound of body weight than adults, because their bones, brains and organs are still developing. Thus kids are absorbing proportionately more chemicals into critical brain and body functions, and are extremely vulnerable to artificial hormones, toxins, and artificial DNA, that can cause lifelong damage.

Wish those facts can be negated, but unfortunately government funded research has validated those concerns with scientific evidence that toxins and hormones are possibly damaging our children. The disturbing findings of Emory University's Chensheng Lu, who led the Environmental Protection Agency-funded research, will be published in February 2006, in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives

A great organic vendor claims, "Don't Panic, Go Organic!". Know too, that children are responsive to diet changes, and damaging chemicals will be flushed from their growing bodies when largely removed from their diets. Occasional burger and fries? Sure...but just as a treat.

Don't worry, Mom and Dad. Just change the menu.
